About the course

Math 8 is the bridge to high school mathematics.  This year students will fulfill the requirements of 8th grade mathematics, as well as Integrated Algebra, a  high school-credit course.  The 8th grade state test is taken in March and the Algebra Regents is taken at the end of the year.  Passing the Integrated Algebra Regents is part of the requirements for graduating high school in New York State.  It is important that you stay on top of your work, because as you have seen thus far, math is cumulative.  The things you learn today will be important tomorrow, a few weeks from now, a few months from now, and a few years from now.  If you need help, ASK FOR HELP.  Arrangements will be made.  Most importantly, do your best.  Don't TRY your best, DO you best.  That is the secret to success.

Grades
In Mr. Smith's Math classes, quarterly grades are made up of:

bullet

TESTS:          55%

bullet

QUIZZES:      35%   (This includes announced and unannounced quizzes, as well as weekly extended HW assignments.)

bullet

HOMEWORK: 10%   (Homework is checked every day, and sometimes collected.)

All tests and quizzes, regardless of the grade must be signed by a parent or guardian. Failure to do so will result in a reduction in the student's homework grade.

The homework grade will be determined by how many homework assignments have been completed by the student out of the total assigned in the current marking period, and will be calculated as a percent.  (For criteria of "completeness" please consult the homework page on this site)

bullet

Students are expected to show the teacher the assignment no later than the day after he/she returns to school.

bullet

If a student is absent the day of an exam, he/she is expected to take the exam upon returning to class.
