Summer Reading

Home

Our summer reading list incorporates two beliefs:  that the summer belongs in the hands of the students, and that good books belong in their hands, as well!

To our students:  The list of books choices is long and varied.  It intertwines suggestions from other students and faculty, and includes a number of recent critically acclaimed best sellers.  We book lovers are idealists.  We hope that ten or twenty – or even more! – of these works will accompany you during the summer months.  Yes, we are also optimists.  We hope that you will discuss them with family members and friends.  We’d like to launch you on the path of becoming life-long readers.  Actually, we’d love for all of Plainedge High School to become a true community of readers.

The members of the faculty and administration of PHS know that the ability to read is a very important skill.  To get better at it, you need to do it.  Reading develops sound thinking, challenges positions, and enriches vocabulary and conversation.  It reveals new worlds; it teaches us how to interpret and analyze; sometimes it is simply mental comfort food, providing us with much joy, pleasure, and spiritual nourishment!

A note to parents:  The Superintendent of Schools, the Board of Education, the faculty, and the administration want your children to experience the magical power of books, turning to them for pleasure and for information.  Thank you for supporting this home/school partnership.  We hope you share our enthusiasm.  This list is intended to improve your children’s reading habits and enhance their enjoyment of books.  Books are not designated as appropriate for specific grade levels because we want this list to encourage all our students to explore a range of works that can provide entertainment, stimulation, challenge, and, yes, enjoyment!  Many of these books can be found at the local library, or can be purchased from stores such as Border’s, or from Internet sites such as Amazon.com.  Amazon sells used copies, as do sites such as Half.com by Ebay.

Many of the books on this list have been chosen from the National Education Association’s list of great reading for young people, as well as from recommendations by Notable Children’s Books and the American Library Association.  Several are recent bestsellers, and many are on Oprah’s list of recommended books. We hope you will also read along with your children, and discuss books with them. Let’s ensure that Plainedge becomes a community of readers!

Sincerely,

The English Department at Plainedge High School
