Coach Responsibilities

Below you will find a list of general responsibilities for NVC coaches.  Coaches/schools will be furnished with an official list in the coming weeks.

  1. Attend the Local Coach Orientation

At a time TBD, coaches will attend our orientation, a gathering of coaches from participating schools and local partners. Representatives from the NVC and The Princeton Review will discuss how the competition will work, detail coach responsibilities, hand out test prep materials, and answer any questions participants may have.

  1. In-School Promotion

It is impossible for us to be present in every classroom in every school informing students about this exciting competition.  We will look to each coach to actively promote the NVC to all students in his/her school.  Whether addressing the students at a planned assembly, posting provided fliers throughout the school or discussing the opportunity with other educators, we want coaches to spread the word about the NVC and garner as much student participation as possible.  Disposable cameras will be provided to help document the in-school promotion.

  1. Distribute Study Materials

In partnership with The Princeton Review, we will be offering free test prep materials to students.  Coaches will be the contact in their schools for distributing these materials.  We ask that coaches retain copies of the materials for any student who requests them.  In addition, the materials are available to download free on the NVC website – www.winwithwords.com.

  1. Proctor the In-School Qualifying Exam

We will offer in-school qualifying exams to determine which students move on to the Citywide Championship.  These exams will be offered October 15-26, 2007.  Each coach will be responsible for proctoring this exam in his/her school (before, during or after school). The exams will be offered in both print and online versions.  A minimum of 10 students is required for reach participating school.

  1. Accompany School Winners to Citywide Championship (optional)

The highest scorers on the qualifying exam will move on to the citywide finals at a local venue.  We encourage coaches to accompany their school’s winners to the finals.

Following the Citywide Championship and the completion of all coach responsibilities, the NVC will provide a $200 stipend to all coaches.
