If reading aloud:

• phrasing and fluency

• reading with expression

• uses punctuation

• 1 to 1 correspondence

• adds words, skips words, skip lines of phrases

• monitoring for sense

• observing early reading behaviors

• cuing systems observed

If reading silently:

• How long does it take to read a selection?

• Observing early reading behaviors
  1.  moving lips
  2.  vocalizing
  3.  using finger or arm

Comprehension

• If asked to retell can the reader retell well?
  1.  use characters names
  2.  uses the structure of the selection
  3.  uses language from the story
  4.  is logical
  5.  doesn't get lost in the details

• Can the reader discuss an idea and give evidence?

• Is there evidence of inferring

• Does the reader have to keep referring to the text

• Can the reader explain what the selection is about?
