Philosophy of Instructional/Educational Technology
Instructional /Educational Technology (ET) is a field which is destined to undergo continuous evolution. Essentially, everyone is a student of ET, and no one is a master. The purpose of this branch of education should be to prepare students and educators for the future by way of giving an historical background of the development of technology, while also stressing what the function of digital technology should be in the present. Educational technology should help students learn “how to learn” and problem-solve as a cooperative group, rather than merely absorbing information as individuals. Using evolving forms of technology to augment education should be likened more to a journey than to a destination. Students of the future must be able to evolve with the technology, instead of learning programs and data, which will become antiquated sooner than they can be mastered. Educational technology needs to focus on continuous growth, transformation, and modification. Digital technology will not only alter the way humankind will learn, but it will alter the way we think. Through the use of technology such as multimedia, Internet, and wireless communication, our lives have already been irrevocably mutated. By realizing that the future will always be uncertain, man will have taken the first step in preparing for evolution of digital technology. Man has continually been in search of the unknown. Whether it has been exploring our planet, exploring our universe, or exploring the inner functions of our own bodies, man has always used technology to assist in his exploration. Now we are at the dawn of a new frontier. Educational technology will be the venue by which an elite group of pioneers will usher the rest of mankind into a new era, in which technology will become the universal system communication. Technology will be used for communication, education, and self-realization. |
