ACADEMIC STANDARDS

1. The computer will identify every 5 weeks students who are currently failing 2 or more subjects.

2. Students who have been identified will be placed on a 5-week probation period. Students on probation must carry a weekly progress report and must report to our Guidance Office weekly to discuss their progress.

3. If the student does not achieve a passing grade at the end of the five-week probation period, he/she will become ineligible from participating in any extra-curricular and/or school sponsored activities for 5 additional weeks.

4. Parents may request a review for a waiver of ineligibility. The Review Committee will consist of:

                              1. Teacher *

2. Student Advocate - Member of Pupil Personnel Services

                              3. Building Principal or Assistant Principal

*All members of the Committee will be selected at the Principal's  discretion based upon availability of the staff during the school day.

5. Promotion/non-promotion status will be determined in accordance with Administrative Regulations of School Board Policy #5122.

Disciplinary Standards

All students in violation of the Code of Conduct will be placed on the probation list and must attend student mediation as determined by the Administrative Assistant. Student mediation will be scheduled with available Main Office or Guidance Office staff. Students receiving 5 Lunch Detentions, an ISS, or OSS will be placed on the ineligibility list and unable to participate in any extra-curricular activities and/or school events for 5 weeks. Parents may request a review for waiver of ineligibility. This request must be submitted to the Administrative Assistant in writing at least 24 hours prior to any extra-curricular activity and/or school event. A Review Committee consisting of a Teacher, Coach/Advisor, Member of Pupil Personnel Services, and the Building Principal or Assistant Principal will then decide on the eligibility status of the student.

PROMOTION/NON-PROMOTION

It is the expectation that all Plainedge Middle School students will pass all subjects, attend school on a regular basis, and behave in a manner consistent with the Plainedge Middle School Behavioral Standards.

a. The point system criteria below will be used to determine if a student will be promoted to the next grade. Accumulation of three

(3) or more points according to this criteria will mandate non-promotion.

Failure of a major subject

Two (2) points per course

Failure of a minor subject

One (1) point per course

25 or more absences from school

One (1) point

2 or more incidents of In-School Suspension (I.S.S.) or 1 incident of Out of School Suspension (O.S.S.)

One (1) point

b. A student who fails one or two major subjects for the year must successfully     complete the summer course(s). Successful completion includes an internal evaluation demonstrating that the student has met Plainedge’s Academic Standards

c. A student who fails any minor subject must successfully complete an independent summer project determined by the department.

d. A student who completes summer school and/or works on a summer project but still has accumulated three or more criteria points will not be promoted to the next grade. (The successful completion of summer school and/or a summer project will reduce the number of points accumulated).

e. If a student fails a major subject after retaking it in summer school, but has fewer than three points, the student will be promoted in all other subjects, however, the student must retake the course during the school year and must retake it until it is passed.

f. If a student does not complete a minor subject project after having failed the subject during the year, but has fewer than three points, the student will be promoted in all other subjects, however, the student must retake the course during the school year and must retake it until it is passed.

g. A student who fails three or more major subjects for the year will automatically be retained. Summer programs are not an option.

h. If a student is retained twice in the same grade, the student will be placed in an alternative program

i. Special Education students are held to Packard’s academic standards and promotion criteria. Promotion/non-promotion decisions are subject to CSE review and recommendation

j. The final decision on promotion/non-promotion shall be made by the principal.
