Celebrating Constitution Day

On September 16th, several John H. West classes used technology to help celebrate Constitution Day which commemorates the creation and signing of the U.S. Constitution.  Collaboration between our computer teacher Ms. Fallon and classroom teachers, helped students developed a better understanding of our Constitution as they participated in the following technology-enhanced experiences.

Mrs. Mahoney’s third grade class and Mrs. Phillips’ and Mrs. Flowers’ fifth grade social studies class participated in an interactive webcast where students had the opportunity to chat live with the education staff of the National Constitution Center as they learned about our Constitution. Students eagerly submitted questions during the webcast and were thrilled when a few questions from West were addressed in the webcast.

Beaming in their patriotic red, white and blue, second graders in Mrs. Meaney’s and Mrs. Feder’s class used a BrainPop Jr. activity and wrote about their rights and responsibilities as members of the West school community.

For example, Tori wrote, “I have the right to have fun on the West playground. I have the responsibility to be fair.”

Juliet wrote, “I have the right to play gym. I have the responsibility to wear my sneakers.”

Reilly wrote, “I have the right to live in a nice world. I have the responsibility to clean up our world.”

While exploring interactive websites such as the Constitution Center’s Bill of Rights Game and Scholastic’s Constitution Game, Ms. Van Roten’s fifth grade social studies classes recorded new insights about our Constitution in their journals which they later shared with classmates.
