Read Across America
Students' Reflections
Katarina, Grade 4
Read Across America Day is a very special day at John H. West school! This day is when we celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday. There is an assembly in the morning in which Mr. Faust reads a Dr. Seuss story. Then there is a game show in which the Hats vs. the Cats. This year the Hats won. There were Borders gift certificates and a cake being raffled off. One of my friends got a Borders gift certificate. Some of the class moms came in and read to us. I look forward to Read Across America Day every year!

I was on the game show. It was fun. I was on the last one so I was not asked a lot of questions. Someone came in the class and they brought in ice cream. It was great.

On Read Across America Day I had a lot of fun! On Read Across America Day John H. West had a Game Show. The Hats won the game show. We celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday. Mr. Faust read us a Dr. Seuss book for his birthday. I enjoyed the book! After Mr. Faust read us a Dr. Seuss book we had many raffles for book gift cards and two kids from grades Kindergarten to fifth grade won. Then after we had the raffles we had the game show and the game show was so cool! Two kids from my class got to go on the game show. After Mr. Faust did the raffle for Dr. Seuss's birthday cake. After the assembly everyone went upstairs and went back to reading in their class room.
That was all about Read Across America Day!
*Callie, Grade 4*
When we had Read Across America Day, I really liked it. Some parts I liked and some parts I didn't like. The parts I liked were when the team Hats finally won. They never won in the past. Cats always win. Some other things I liked about it were when we had guest readers come in. This year our reading teacher Mrs. McEnerney and Mrs. Quealy were our readers. I liked this because we got cookies and other stuff. I also wish I could win the big cake or a gift certificate, but I know not every one wins. I also hope I could be picked for the game show next year. That is what we did on Read Across America Day!

What is Read Across America Day in John H. West? What Read Across America Day is all about, is when my school has a game show about books! Hats against Cats! We celebrate Dr. Seuss! Before the game show we listen to Mr. Faust, our principal, read us a Dr. Seuss book! After the game show we raffle off the big cake! We go back to our classrooms and special guests come to your classroom and read you a book! My class's visitor was Dr. Richman, our Superintendent! Everyone dressed up as their favorite character in a book and had fun! We had fun eating ice-cream and popcorn. It was a fun day at John H. West!

Deanna, Grade 4
At my school, John H. West, we have a day called Read Across America Day. It's the day we celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday. On that day, my school has a game show! This year, I was sick. I was never on the game show, and I always wanted to be on it. I was called to be on the show on the day I was sick! But there's always next year. According to my little sister and my friends in my class, every class had a special reader. I'm not sure who my special reader was, but my friend had Dr. Richman, the Superintendent! I was very jealous. But next year will be my last year here, so I'm going to try to not get sick!
Oh and one more thing:
I love Read Across America Day!
*Shannon ,Grade 4*
*When our school had Read Across America Day, I liked it. What I liked the most was I got to be my favorite story character. I got to be Kailey from the American Girl books. I wasn't picked for the game show. Although I wasn't picked, I liked watching it. I liked the mystery readers, and my friend's mom baked really yummy cupcakes. I hope every year the whole school celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday!

Read Across America Day
On Read Across America Day I read in my classroom almost the whole entire day. All the 2nd graders split up in to groups. I went to Mrs. Meaney's classroom. My friend Natalie was there. Mrs. Meaney read The Quilt Story. After Mrs. Meaney read the story Natalie and I got a piece of paper. In the middle we drew a picture of our own. I drew Sonic, Tails, Cream, and Amy from Sonic Heroes. Then I went back to my classroom. I had a great time on Read Across America Day.
Jill, 2nd grade
First we went to the gym for Dr. Seuss's birthday and we had a raffle. Then we had lunch. We had green eggs and ham. All the kids went to different 2nd grade classrooms. The teachers read a story and after we got a piece of paper to write our favorite stories down. Then we read books. The day was great.

READ ACROSS AMERICA
First we did the raffle to figure out who would be in the special game. But I didn't get picked. And then we played a game. It was a weird game! It was a weird because the girl in the game was funny. The game was all about books and we kept a tally of how many answers were right. The teams were Hats and the Cats. When we came back to the classroom we read the class library's books. I read The Cat and the Hat. Then Mrs. Boutin came in the room to read us Amelia Bedelia. I had a really fun time.
