On May 10th and 11th our fifth grade classes
went to Caumsett
State Park, which is in Lloyd Neck on
Long Island. We learned about four different ecosystems
- 2 the first day and 2 the second day.
The first day we went to the sea
shore and learned about the erosion to the land caused by the rain
and strong winds. We found
many different animals, rocks, shells, and plants. Then we had lunch
on the beach. After lunch we walked over to the salt
marsh and discovered that it’s like a supermarket because the
animals come in and out, and it is also a nursery because all the baby
animals are born there. We
found crabs, fish and cactus!!
The second day was just as
exciting as the first. We
started out in the succession forest.
We learned what happens if a squirrel brought over an acorn from a
bigger forest and it grew bigger and produced more acorns and trees.
We also learned that the oak trees would block the sun from the
other plant, those plants would die.
If this continues the plants below the oak trees that need sun
would all die off and the oak and
other tall trees would take over the forest. We had lunch and then
went to the pond.
The pond
was next! We got to use
the nets to find creatures such as insects and turtles.
Since there were leeches in the pond water we knew it must be
polluted. The pond water
was 70 degrees.
