Plainedge Public Schools

Dear Plainedge,

I hope you and your family had a restful and joyful winter recess. As we prepare for an impending historic blizzard, all Plainedge schools will be closed tomorrow for an “old-fashioned” SNOW DAY. The expected weather conditions may be challenging, and the safety of our students, families, and staff remains our highest priority.

While we know many were looking forward to returning to school routines, a snow day also offers a wonderful opportunity to continue learning in meaningful and engaging ways at home.

Turning a Snow Day into a Learning Day

We encourage families to view tomorrow not just as a day off, but as a day of exploration, creativity, and connection. Here are some simple ways to invest your child in learning while enjoying time together.

Literacy & Language

  • Read together for at least 20–30 minutes.
  • Ask your child to write a short “Snow Day Story” or keep a winter weather journal.
  • Have older students research how snow forms and explain it to the family.

STEM in the Snow

  • Measure snowfall and compare it to past storms.
  • Discuss temperature changes and how they affect snow and ice.
  • Build a snow structure and talk about engineering and design.
  • For older students, calculate perimeter, area, or estimate volume of snow piles.

Real-World Math

  • Cook or bake together and practice measuring ingredients.
  • Double or halve a recipe to apply fractions.
  • Create a budget for a pretend winter trip.

Creativity & Wellness

  • Draw, paint, or photograph winter scenes.
  • Write letters to relatives or friends.
  • Get outside safely for fresh air and physical activity.
  • Practice mindfulness or gratitude as a family.

 Family Conversations

  • Share winter memories from your childhood.
  • Discuss goals for the second half of the school year.
  • Set one academic and one personal goal together.

We appreciate your partnership in ensuring that learning remains a continuous and meaningful experience, even on snowy days. As the storm is expected to be significant, it may also impact Tuesday’s schedule, and I will provide updates should any changes become necessary.

Please continue to monitor district communications for updates.

Stay safe and warm.

Sincerely,

Carol Muscarella
Interim Superintendent
