Career News

Career Development is a vital component in a student’s overall educational process, particularly when they enter middle school.

Middle schools are designed to help young adolescents in several ways. The schools continue the career awareness that students began in elementary school. They also help students understand how their current educational and personal choices will affect their future life roles, in particular their choices for a career.

The following represents a basic plan for assisting students in the Plainedge Middle School with developing their plan for the future!

Grade 6:

Throughout the months of September and October the guidance counselors meet with the 6th grade students in small groups. During the meeting, we have a discussion regarding the student’s future plans and which careers they are interested in pursing. Students also work on career activities in their Family and Consumer Science classes. Career planning helps students focus on their education. Setting goals provides motivation for doing well in middle and high school and directs future education and employment.

Grade 7:

In the Spring, 7th grade students have the opportunity to participate in a Career Fair that is held at Plainedge High School. The students have the opportunity to interact and speak with over 15 career representatives. The seventh graders really enjoy the individual attention they experience from each representative. They are able to start thinking about what their own interests and abilities are in relation to careers. Overall, it is a successful and exciting day!

In addition to the Career Fair, students will be taking a StrengthsExplorer Assessment powered by Gallup, in Student Naviance. The StrengthsExplorer Assessment helps to uncover talents and reveals a student’s potential strengths and how to make the most of his/her talents. In addition, there are also potential career options suggested based on these strengths and talents.

Grades 6, 7 and 8:

In addition to the grade level career activities, we also have students participate in a school wide college awareness week. The counseling center launches a series of informational programs on the importance of preparing early for college.
